Civic Duty and co-founders Julian Omidi and Dr. Michael Omidi announce their support of the charity Smiles through Art, an organization devoted to bringing interactive arts appreciation programs to young children and adults afflicted with chronic and potentially terminal illnesses, as well as their families. The charity’s strategy is two-fold: giving those with serious medical conditions a voice through their creativity and art, and secondly, to elevate the environmental design of hospitals and medical facilities to alleviate stress and promote healing.
“Creative arts programs and inspiring surroundings are vitally important to intellectual, emotional and spiritual development,” says Civic Duty co-founder Dr. Michael Omidi. “Smiles through Art gives people who are suffering from grave illnesses an opportunity for self-exploration and healing, which is like ray of sunshine into their dark circumstances. Smiles through Art (http://www.smilesthroughart.blogspot.com) was founded by Sharon Persovski, a graphic and environmental designer with a passion for community development through art and design. Persovski, who has multitudes of experience in the design of large scale international projects – from shopping malls in Japan, Singapore and Mexico to luxury spas and hotels in Las Vegas and China, has decided to put her many years as an accomplished environmental designer to work — helping those in great need. The organization helps people suffering from degenerative illnesses explore different avenues of emotional healing. Adults and children in particular are allowed to use their creative instincts to help navigate their fears and anxieties about their illnesses in a way that expands their horizons.
Persovski is an advocate of using environmental design as a process for positive impact on people’s health. She believes that physical environment has a significant effect on reducing stress for both patients and caregivers, increasing the overall quality of care, and most importantly improving health outcomes. Smiles through Art works closely with doctors, healthcare administrators, and emergency aid workers to develop art projects in hospitals and healthcare institutions around the world, not only in the United States, but in other countries including Mexico and Afghanistan.
