The co-founders of the charity Civic Duty, Dr. Michael Omidi and his brother Julian Omidi, recently lent support to the disaster relief organization Team Rubicon. Team Rubicon engages hundreds of US veterans by helping them to find a renewed sense of purpose for their skills and experiences by helping those in need following natural disasters. After Typhoon Haiyan, the category five super typhoon that killed more than 5,000 and devastated parts of Southeast Asia last November, Team Rubicon helped thousands of victims of in the Philippines.
Team Rubicon’s Philippines aid effort, called Operation Seabird, deployed a medical team of physicians, nurses, surgeons and emergency care workers to the Philippine providence of Tacloban two days after Super Typhoon Haiyan made landfall. The team performed search and rescue operations, medical triage, surgical support, and other relief activities. More than 2000 patients were triaged or vaccinated before operations were transitioned to a long-term care team.
“The scope of the human destruction from this super typhoon was unbelievable; thousands were killed and millions of people displaced from their homes,” says Dr. Michael Omidi, cofounder of Civic Duty. “Through ‘Operation Seabird,’ Team Rubicon was able to send in aid workers long before other organizations, and provide emergency medical care for thousands of storm victims. We are awed by the work of Team Rubicon and we will continue to support their life-saving work.”
What sets Team Rubicon (http://www.teamrubiconusa.org) apart from other relief organizations is that it combines the skills and expertise of veterans with those of first responders. Since 2010, the organization has sent emergency aid workers all over the world to deliver disaster relief through search and rescue missions and the provision of emergency medical aid. It employs thousands of United States military veterans, using their training and skills to provide efficient rescue and relief tactics. To date, Team Rubicon has sent aid workers to Haiti, Sudan, Burma, Chile, Philippines and Pakistan, as well as to last year’s U.S. disaster sites post-Hurricane Sandy and the Oklahoma tornado.
