Few people would willingly risk their lives for a stranger, and Civic Duty co-founders Dr. Michael Omidi and Julian Omidi hail Debra Fine as a hero for her selfless actions in a Santa Monica shooting incident on June 7, 2013.

Last July of 2012, CNN reported that a young lone gunman killed 12 and wounded 58 at a movie theater in Colorado. Six months later in December, 2012, CNN reported that a young lone gunman prowled through the halls of an elementary school in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, and executed 26 people, 20 of them mere children. This June, 2013, the Los Angeles Times reported that another young lone gunman on a murderous rampage killed five people in Santa Monica, California.

It was a moment of truth for Debra Fine. As reported in the Los Angeles Times, Debra Fine was on her way to an appointment when she found herself in a showdown on the streets of Santa Monica with a young lone gunman, John Zawahri. Seeing Zawahri aim an automatic weapon at the car in front of her, Debra hit the gas, drove straight into the line of fire using her vehicle to cutoff the shooter and put herself in mortal danger. Zawahri fired multiple rounds into Fine’s car and her survival is a miraculous testament to her bravery and courage. Dr. Michael Omidi wonders, “If presented with the same life or death circumstances: who among us would do the same thing?”

Debra Fine did not have a plan. She took action. When her car was riddled with bullets, she pretended to be dead and prayed that the shooter would forget about her. After arrival at the emergency room, Debra learned that the bullets missed her vital organs by inches. Heroes are people who make great sacrifices for others. Civic Duty is honored to recognize Debra Fine as a hero.
